Oman workshop highlights satellite and drone technology for improved flood risk analysis

Oman is really working hard on getting ready for disasters by having a meeting about how pictures from satellites and drones can help figure out the risk of floods and make emergency plans better all over the country. This meeting had a lot of people, government workers and technical experts talking about new tools that use maps from space to watch for floods, see what might be dangerous and respond to disasters.

The meeting showed how important it is to use satellite pictures and drones to find areas that might be in trouble before bad weather happens. The people at the meeting talked about how pictures from satellites and drones can give us information about the land, water and buildings so the people in charge can make good decisions when there is a flood in Oman and when Oman is dealing with flood emergencies. Oman and the people of Oman will be better prepared for floods with this technology and with the help of satellite pictures and drones, in Oman.

The technologies are expected to support more accurate mapping of flood-prone zones while improving early warning capabilities.

Officials noted that Oman has experienced several weather-related events in recent years, underlining the importance of investing in modern technologies that strengthen resilience against natural hazards. By integrating satellite observations with drone-based surveys, authorities can collect detailed information that is often difficult to obtain through conventional ground inspections. The data can assist in evaluating flood impacts, planning mitigation measures and supporting recovery efforts after extreme weather incidents.

The workshop also emphasised collaboration among government agencies, academic institutions and research organisations to maximise the use of geospatial information. Participants exchanged expertise on data collection, image analysis and digital mapping techniques that can contribute to national disaster risk management strategies. The discussions further explored how technological innovation can support sustainable urban planning and infrastructure development by identifying areas exposed to flood risks.

Experts said adopting advanced monitoring systems aligns with Oman’s broader efforts to improve climate resilience and disaster preparedness. The combination of satellite imagery and drone technology is expected to enhance situational awareness, reduce response times and strengthen the country’s ability to protect lives and property during adverse weather conditions.

The workshop concluded with renewed emphasis on expanding technical cooperation and developing innovative solutions that improve flood risk assessment while supporting long-term environmental planning. Officials said continued investment in geospatial technologies will play an increasingly important role in safeguarding communities and building resilience against future climate-related challenges.
