Delegates from Oman participated in a number of important side meetings during the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly being held in New York, dealing with a number of issues, including human rights, environment, maritime security, economic cooperation, etc. Through its participation in these important meetings, the Sultanate of Oman affirmed its support for the promotion of regional security, achieving sustainable economic development, environmental issues and maritime security. This demonstrates the Sultanate’s proactive approach towards international affairs, which is fully consistent with the priorities laid out in the Oman Vision 2040. Through their active engagement on various international platforms, the Omani diplomats emphasised the importance of international issues in relation to the progressive policies adopted by the Sultanate.
Addressing a high-level session marking the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, Sheikh Mohammed Al Qutbi, Head of the International Organisations Department at the Foreign Ministry, emphasized that human wellbeing remains the ultimate goal of national advancement. He presented Oman’s ongoing reform of its social protection framework, designed to foster social justice, equal opportunities, and comprehensive safety nets. Sheikh Al Qutbi also represented the Sultanate at a joint summit titled “Human Rights for All: From Commitment to Collective Action,” co-sponsored by the Netherlands, Mexico, and the OHCHR.
In economic affairs, Omani Ambassador to the United States Talal Al Rahbi represented the nation at the GCC-ASEAN ministerial convention. Discussions centered on boosting investment channels, expanding bilateral trade volumes, and deepening ties between the Arabian Gulf and Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, Deputy Permanent Representative for Maritime Affairs Dr. Adnan Al Azri joined foreign ministers from Canada, Japan, Estonia, the Netherlands, and the Philippines to deliberate on safeguarding subsea infrastructure, reinforcing freedom of navigation, and improving maritime security coordination.
On environmental policy, Omani Delegate Khalid Al Rabkhi participated in UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s climate action forum, advocating for balanced climate adaptation that respects individual economic trajectories. Al Rabkhi also joined global calls to enforce international humanitarian law and safeguard aid workers operating in conflict regions during a session convened by an international coalition including the United Kingdom, Jordan, and Brazil.
