Oman proposes regional cooperation mechanism for Strait of Hormuz to strengthen maritime security

Oman has given Iran a plan for a cooperation group that wants to make the management and security of the Strait of Hormuz better. This step might help keep the sea safe and protect one of the important shipping routes in the world. The idea has also gotten support from countries in the area according to people who know about the talks.

The plan is part of growing work after recent decreases in tension in the region. Gulf countries are looking for the solutions to keep commercial ships moving freely through the small waterway. The Strait of Hormuz moves one-fifth of all the oil shipped around the world. Keeping this area stable is very important for the world energy markets and global trade.

Under the Omani proposal, the mechanism would be modelled on the cooperative framework used in the Strait of Malacca. Participating regional states would voluntarily contribute to services including maritime navigation, search and rescue operations, environmental protection and shipping safety, creating a shared responsibility system rather than placing responsibility on a single country.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi discussed the proposal during consultations with Omani and Saudi officials, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in maintaining security in the Gulf. Iranian officials have also reiterated their view that lasting stability should be achieved through dialogue among neighbouring states while criticising external military actions that they say have heightened tensions in the region.

The proposal is part of broader diplomatic engagement designed to restore confidence among international shipping operators after months of disruptions linked to regional conflict. Recent signs of easing tensions have fuelled hopes that commercial maritime traffic can continue without further interruptions, benefiting energy exporters, importers and global supply chains.

While discussions are ongoing and no final agreement has been announced, Oman’s mediation role continues to place the Sultanate at the centre of regional diplomatic efforts. Observers say any consensus on a cooperative management framework for the Strait of Hormuz could contribute to long-term maritime security and reinforce confidence in one of the world’s busiest energy transit corridors.
