Strong Khareef Season Boosts Flight and Passenger Traffic at Salalah Airport
SHARE

Salalah Airport has recorded a notable rise in flights and passenger numbers as the 2026 Khareef season attracts more visitors to Dhofar, highlighting the growing role of seasonal tourism in driving air traffic to southern Oman.

The increase in aviation activity comes during one of the busiest periods of the year for Salalah, when the region’s cooler weather, mist-covered mountains and green landscapes draw visitors from across Oman and abroad. The seasonal demand has encouraged airlines to increase flight capacity and operate additional services to meet the rise in travellers.

Airport operations have been strengthened to manage the higher passenger volumes during the Khareef period. Additional flights and increased travel activity are helping improve connectivity between Salalah and key destinations, while supporting the wider tourism and hospitality sectors in Dhofar.

The Khareef season, which generally runs from June to September, transforms much of Dhofar’s landscape as seasonal rainfall brings cooler temperatures and vegetation to the region. The annual weather phenomenon has become a major attraction for domestic and international tourists, contributing significantly to activity across hotels, restaurants, transport services, retail outlets and tourism businesses.

The rise in passenger traffic also reflects the importance of Salalah Airport as a gateway to the governorate during the peak tourism months. Authorities and airport operators have been working to maintain smooth passenger movement and ensure facilities can handle the additional demand associated with the seasonal influx.

Dhofar’s tourism attractions extend beyond the green mountain areas, with visitors also exploring beaches, valleys, caves and cultural sites across the governorate. The combination of the seasonal climate and the region’s natural and heritage attractions continues to strengthen Salalah’s appeal as a summer destination.

The strong airport performance during the Khareef season is expected to provide further support to Oman’s tourism objectives by encouraging visitor spending and increasing economic activity in Dhofar. As visitor numbers remain elevated through the season, air connectivity will continue to play an important role in supporting the region’s tourism industry.

The latest increase in flights and passengers underscores how the annual Khareef phenomenon has developed into a major seasonal travel period for Oman, with Salalah Airport serving as a key entry point for visitors seeking Dhofar’s distinctive summer climate.
