Oman Sees Decline in Births and Deaths During First Half of 2026, Official Data Shows

Oman recorded fewer births and deaths during the first half of 2026 than the same period last year, according to the latest figures from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). The statistics show that the Sultanate’s births and deaths rates are steadily decreasing, but overall positive for the country’s natural increase.

The NCSI announced that there had been 32,405 births in Oman across the country as of June 2026. The number is lower than the same period last year with a decreasing trend. The figure includes 28,828 births among Oman’s citizens and 3,577 foreign-born nationals. Boys accounted for a slightly higher share of births than girls in both population groups.

Official statistics also showed that the number of registered deaths fell during the first half of the year compared with the same period last year. The decline covered both Omani nationals and expatriates, indicating an overall reduction in mortality during the reporting period. Despite the decrease in births, the number of newborns continued to significantly exceed registered deaths, supporting continued natural population growth across the country.

Monthly data highlighted a modest slowdown in June, when 5,560 live births were recorded, down from 5,665 in May. Of the June total, 4,958 births were to Omani families, while expatriates accounted for 602 births. The latest figures suggest that birth registrations have remained relatively stable month to month, although at levels below those seen in previous years.

Vital statistics released by the NCSI are used by policymakers to monitor demographic trends and support planning across healthcare, education, housing and other public services. Regular updates on births and deaths also provide insights into population changes and help government agencies allocate resources based on evolving demographic needs.

The latest half-year data reinforces a gradual demographic shift in Oman, with lower birth and death totals continuing alongside steady natural population growth, reflecting broader long-term trends observed in the Sultanate.
