MUSCAT: Subsidiaries of Oman Food Capital (OFC), the food-sector investment arm of Oman Investment Authority (OIA), are advancing a series of pilot projects designed to diversify Oman’s food economy, strengthen domestic production and improve the efficiency and sustainability of food farming.
The initiatives span aquaculture, controlled-environment agriculture, farm automation and dairy processing, reflecting OFC’s broader focus on developing new production capabilities and adding value across Oman’s food value chain. Among the pilots are an offshore oyster farm on Masirah Island, greenhouse structures above aquaculture ponds, automated feeding systems for fish farms and a new range of Greek yoghurt products.
On Masirah Island, the Oyster Pilot Farming Project is testing floating-cage technology to produce high-quality oysters while harnessing their natural ability to filter seawater. The two-hectare offshore farm comprises 3,600 cages arranged across six offshore lines, with imported oyster seed weighing around eight grammes at the start of cultivation. The project was targeting production of more than 30 tonnes by the end of 2025, while also generating environmental benefits through improved water quality and supporting economic diversification on the island.
Another pilot is testing the feasibility of placing greenhouse structures above aquaculture ponds, creating a more controlled and secure production environment. Four production ponds are being covered by greenhouse structures, supported by a zero-seawater-exchange system designed to provide greater stability in production conditions. The approach has been identified as a preferred solution for implementation at the island site, with anticipated benefits including enhanced process control and product quality, improved production efficiency and greater operational stability.
OFC subsidiaries are also piloting timer-based automated feeding systems across aquaculture farms, offering a simpler alternative to more sophisticated automated solutions. Around 10 units are being installed at each farm, with the system designed to streamline feed management, maintain stable productivity and improve operational efficiency while reducing costs. Initial results indicate productivity comparable to more complex feeding systems.
Diversification is also extending beyond primary production into value-added food manufacturing. At Mazoon Dairy in the Wilayat of Al Sinainah, Al Buraimi Governorate, a pilot is developing a range of Greek yoghurt products in several flavours, including plain, peach and apricot, strawberry and mango; and blueberry. The initiative is intended to expand Mazoon Dairy’s product portfolio, create greater value from locally produced dairy and reach wider consumer segments.
Taken together, the pilots underscore OFC’s approach of using innovation, technology and value addition to strengthen Oman’s food-security capabilities while creating new commercial opportunities.
