The court in the country has sentenced a resident from an Arab country to one year in jail after finding her guilty of making and sharing online content that went against the public decency rules.
The court decision that was made by the Court of First Instance in the Seeb area, says the woman must leave Oman after she finishes her time in jail. Along with the jail time and the order to leave the court said all the online accounts she used for the content must be shut down for good.
The court also said the electronic devices she used during the broadcast must be taken away. They also said the final decision must be shared as required by law.
According to papers from the public prosecutor the woman was charged with a small crime because she broke the country’s rules about using computers and the internet. The investigation showed that she made, showed and shared content during a live social media broadcast. That content was against the morals the country believes in.
After the decision was made the public prosecutor said people should be more careful and act in a way when using the internet in the country.
Court officials reminded everyone, both locals and foreigners, that they must follow the law, respect the rules of the community and act in a way that matches the values of Oman when they post things online.
In Oman making, sharing or spreading anything that breaks the rules of order goes against morals or breaks the standards of the community can lead to very strict punishments.
The country’s rules say that judges can send people to jail, take away their devices and order foreigners to leave if they break the law and finish their jail time.
