A Primary Court in Wilayat of Barka has directed a door manufacturing and installation company to refund RO1,550 to a consumer after adjudging that the firm had failed to meet its contractual obligation. The Court also levied a penalty on the establishment for violating the Consumer Protection Law, thus taking strict action against such violations in the Sultanate.
The case was brought before the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) after a complainant indicated that the firm had demanded payment for services not rendered. The matter was forwarded to the Public Prosecution after investigations which led to the filing of a case by the latter before the relevant court.
After reviewing the evidence and hearing the parties, the court found the business guilty of failing to provide the contracted service in accordance with the agreed terms. As part of its ruling, the court ordered the company to reimburse the consumer RO1,550, representing the amount paid under the contract. In addition, the business was fined for breaching the provisions of the Consumer Protection Law and was directed to bear the legal costs associated with the case.
The judgment highlights the role of Oman’s legal system in ensuring that businesses honour their contractual commitments and that consumers have access to legal remedies when services are not delivered as promised. The CPA said it continues to monitor market practices and pursue legal action against establishments that fail to comply with consumer protection regulations.
Authorities urged businesses across the Sultanate to uphold professional standards, deliver services within agreed timelines and comply fully with the Consumer Protection Law. Consumers were also encouraged to report suspected violations through the CPA’s official channels, enabling the authority to investigate complaints and take appropriate enforcement measures where necessary.
The latest ruling reflects Oman’s broader efforts to strengthen consumer confidence, promote fair commercial practices and ensure accountability within the marketplace through effective legal enforcement.
