Oman Environment Authority Issues Marine Safety Warning Following Oil Spill Observations

Environmental authorities in Oman have warned residents and foreign tourists not to enter water areas contaminated by oil as field teams are on standby to deal with the oil pollution incident.

The Environment Authority (EA) issued an advisory on Wednesday saying that citizens should be vigilant about the presence of oil in the sea and avoid contacting the pollutants while authorities are controlling the situation.

They warned that people should not approach any oil spots and advised them against trying to remove the substance themselves saying such actions could be dangerous to the public and that only certified field teams are fit to handle the removal process.

The preventative safety measures stem from ongoing environmental monitoring operations conducted by the EA to evaluate conditions along Omani shorelines.

In its official advisory, the regulatory agency instructed beachgoers to immediately report any sightings of floating petroleum slicks, oiled shorelines, or distressed and deceased marine fauna. Reports can be submitted directly through the designated official helpline at 93930088 to enable rapid deployment of ecological assessment and remediation units.

Furthermore, environmental officials reminded citizens and residents to follow instructions provided by emergency response personnel on-site and to verify information exclusively through official governmental communications, cautioning against the dissemination of unverified rumors or speculative reports regarding marine contamination incidents.

The Sultanate’s coastal ecosystems support diverse marine life, vital fisheries, and commercial activity, making rapid response and public cooperation essential whenever maritime pollution threatens shorelines.

The Environment Authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining active environmental surveillance, ensuring rapid containment of pollutants, and protecting public health and delicate marine ecosystems across the country’s territorial waters.
