Oman’s consumer protection authorities have requested that people stop using a specific portable BenQ projector because it can cause fires.
The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has been working to protect the consumers by checking whether all products on the market are safe and of good quality.
The CPA issued the warning after identifying the potential risk posed by the portable BenQ projector which can “present a hazard to users if not used properly due to malfunction”. A recall of the BenQ GV50 was issued by the CPA as the product has a manufacturing defect which could cause it to overheat.
Users have been advised to discontinue operation of the projector until the matter is resolved through the manufacturer or authorised distributor.
The CPA explained that the warning forms part of its product safety monitoring programme, which tracks recalls and safety notifications issued by manufacturers and international regulatory bodies. The authority regularly informs consumers about products that may pose health or safety risks and encourages prompt action to prevent accidents or property damage.
Consumers who have purchased the affected projector are advised to check the model details and contact the supplier or authorised service centre for guidance on inspection, repair or replacement where applicable. Officials also urged retailers and distributors to cooperate with the safety measures and ensure that affected units are handled in accordance with approved procedures.
The Consumer Protection Authority continues to encourage the public to report defective or potentially unsafe products through its official communication channels. Such reports help authorities identify emerging safety concerns and take appropriate regulatory action to protect consumers across the Sultanate.
