Oman Weather Alert: Rain and Thunderstorms Expected in Al Hajar Mountains
SHARE

Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to come to parts of Oman’s Al Hajar Mountains and nearby areas starting from Monday evening August 17. The weather conditions are likely to stay for a few days but they may change in strength according to officials.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) through the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre provided the weather alert because more clouds are expected to appear over the mountain range.

People living in the area and those visiting have been told to stay careful because different weather dangers might happen during this time.

The weather forecast shows that there will be rain with levels of strength along with thunder and lightning. There is also a chance of hail in some places. The weather situation might cause water to flow in wadis and mountain streams. This could be dangerous, for people who are traveling through areas or visiting valleys when it is raining.

The CAA also warned of strong downdraft winds associated with thunderstorms. These winds may raise dust and reduce horizontal visibility, potentially creating difficult conditions for motorists, particularly along mountain roads and open areas.

The expected weather activity will gradually affect sections of the Al Hajar Mountains and nearby areas, with the strength of the conditions likely to differ from one location to another.

The advisory comes as Oman enters a period when convective cloud development over mountainous terrain can produce short-duration but intense rainfall.

Authorities have called on the public to closely monitor official weather updates and exercise caution if conditions deteriorate. People visiting mountain areas should take particular care around wadis and streams, where water levels can rise quickly after rainfall.

Motorists are also advised to account for reduced visibility and sudden wind conditions while travelling through affected areas. Lightning, hail and dust generated by strong winds could further complicate road conditions.

The latest warning highlights the importance of following official guidance as the forecast period progresses. The CAA has encouraged residents to stay informed about subsequent updates from the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre as weather conditions develop across the Sultanate.
