Oman Urges Integrated Global Action for Palestinian Economic Recovery at UNCTAD

The Sultanate of Oman has upheld its support for the people of Palestine’s right to self-determination, accentuating the need for establishing Palestine as an independent state within the June 4, 1967, borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to the UN resolutions and international laws. Palestinian Economic Recovery

Idris Abdulrahman Al Khanjari, the Permanent Representative of Oman to the UN and International Organizations in Geneva, stated at the 73rd session of the Trade and Development Board of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that financial and developmental support to Palestine is financial and developmental support to Palestine as a key contribution to regional stability. Aligning with joint statements from the Arab Group, the Group of 77 and China, and the Asia-Pacific Group, Oman cautioned that long-term security hinges directly on empowering the Palestinian national economy.

Palestinian Economic Recovery

Highlighting the severe devastation documented in UNCTAD’s report, Al Khanjari noted that the economic crisis facing Palestine has reached an unprecedented scale, particularly following the escalation in October 2023. Nearly 92 percent of economic facilities in the Gaza Strip have been either destroyed or heavily damaged, driving reconstruction and recovery estimates up to approximately $16.2 billion. He emphasized that these figures reflect a catastrophic loss of livelihoods, employment opportunities, and foundational human dignity.

Oman underscored that addressing the crisis requires tackling its structural root causes—primarily the Israeli occupation’s ongoing control over natural resources and restrictions on the movement of people and trade. Al Khanjari stated that physical reconstruction alone is insufficient without a comprehensive approach that rebuilds infrastructure, reactivates commercial trade, and strengthens small and medium-sized enterprises to foster self-reliance.

Concluding the statement, the Omani representative commended UNCTAD for its analytical work and technical capacity-building initiatives. He called on the international community to transition from short-term emergency aid toward a sustainable developmental strategy, emphasizing that economic empowerment remains intrinsically linked to securing a lasting and peaceful resolution.
