Sultan Haitham Grants Royal Pardon to 459 Prisoners Ahead of Mawlid al-Nabi

Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has granted a royal pardon to 459 prisoners, including Omanis and foreigners, who were serving prison sentences inside the country’s correctional institutions, citing a particular royal decree.

It was issued on the occasion of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, 1448 AH – Mawlid al-Nabi, which is one of the official holidays established by Oman’s royal decrees. The royal pardon came after the show of mercy toward the families of those who were released from prison.

Royal pardons tied to religious and national occasions are a recurring feature of governance in the Sultanate, typically announced in the lead-up to holidays such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and the Prophet’s Birthday.

Such gestures are generally read as reflecting the leadership’s emphasis on compassion and social reintegration, offering selected inmates a chance to return to their families and communities rather than complete their full sentences.

No further breakdown of the cases involved, the nationalities of foreign inmates affected, or the specific offences covered by Tuesday’s pardon was disclosed. Authorities have not indicated when the release process for those covered by the order will begin.

The pardon comes just days before Oman marks the Prophet’s Birthday as an official holiday on Thursday, August 27, which this year extends into a three-day break for the public and private sector workforce, running through the weekend to August 29.

Royal pardons of this scale are among the mechanisms Oman uses periodically to manage its prison population, alongside standard judicial processes, and are separate from routine parole or sentence-reduction procedures handled through the courts.
