Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, has submitted its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) report to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), as part of its commitment to implementing the requirements of the Paris Agreement and strengthening national efforts to address climate change.

The report sets an emissions reduction target of 7 per cent by 2035 through unconditional measures, in addition to a 26 per cent reduction conditional on the availability of financing, technical support, technology transfer and capacity building. This brings the total potential reduction target to 33 per cent.

The report serves as the country’s key national document outlining Oman’s climate targets and actions through 2035. It reflects Oman’s direction towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing climate adaptation and resilience, and supporting sustainable development pathways in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and the national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The updated NDC is based on 2024 as the baseline year, with Oman’s total greenhouse gas emissions estimated at around 93.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

The report highlights Oman’s focus on expanding renewable energy projects, improving energy efficiency, supporting low-carbon industrial transformation, developing green hydrogen, promoting the circular economy and exploring the application of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technologies.

The Environment Authority confirmed that the preparation of the report was the result of an integrated national effort carried out in coordination with government and private sector entities and relevant institutions. It was developed based on national data, information, technical studies on emissions and climate impacts, and assessments of pathways towards a low-carbon economy.

Through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), Oman reaffirms its continued support for international efforts to combat climate change and its commitment to strengthening national and global cooperation and partnerships to achieve a more sustainable and resilient future for present and future generations.
