RAFO Airlifts Sick Crew Member from Ship off Dhofar Coast

A crew member working on a merchant ship that was sailing near the coast of Dhofar was taken to safety this week after having a problem while at sea.

This happened because the Royal Air Force of Oman which is called RAFO helped get the person out of danger.

The worker got sick while the ship was in the waters near Dhofar, which’s in the southern part of Oman. This made the people on the ship ask for help quickly. RAFO teams.

Took the person directly from the ship. They brought the person to Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah. There the person was given medical care.

No one has told us what the problem was, where the worker was from or what the name of the ship was. Also no more information about where the ship went after that was shared.

The rescue underscores the role Oman’s air force plays beyond conventional defence duties, regularly stepping in to support emergency medical response and humanitarian operations along the Sultanate’s coastline.

Dhofar’s waters sit along a heavily trafficked international shipping corridor linking the Arabian Sea to global trade routes, making the region a frequent site for such at-sea medical interventions involving passing commercial vessels.

Salalah, the regional capital of Dhofar, hosts one of Oman’s key southern ports and a major hospital equipped to handle emergency cases referred from both onshore and offshore incidents.

Sultan Qaboos Hospital has previously received patients evacuated from ships and remote areas of the governorate, reflecting its role as the primary referral centre for the region.

Search-and-rescue and medical evacuation missions of this kind are typically carried out through coordination between Oman’s maritime authorities, port operators and the armed forces, particularly when a vessel is too far from shore for conventional ambulance transport or when a patient’s condition requires rapid airlift to specialised care.

RAFO has periodically been called upon for similar operations involving sailors and fishermen along Oman’s coast, reflecting the broader responsibilities the force carries in safeguarding lives at sea alongside its core defence mandate.
