To promote sustainability in agriculture and preserve the ancient water structures, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has invested more than RO 620,000 to restore them throughout Dhahirah Governorate. These 40 agreements have been executed in an attempt to restore the damaged irrigation systems and dig additional ground water wells for the benefit of local farmers. This initiative has arisen as a result of harsh weather experienced this year due to Al Musarrat depression that led to serious damage to water channels, underground pipes, and wellheads. With the help of Governor Tahir Al Junaibi, this strategic approach seeks to bring back into functionality the hydraulic capacity of these ancient water distribution systems.
A financial allocation of RO 513,555 has been dedicated to 35 specific contracts targeting the physical rehabilitation and structural maintenance of degraded falaj channels. These works involve clearing blocked subterranean pathways, extracting accumulated silt and storm debris, and repairing damaged structural walls. Meanwhile, five additional contracts totaling RO 107,808 focus on drilling vital auxiliary wells. These auxiliary supply points will augment current water volumes, guaranteeing steady flow rates to agricultural plots during peak irrigation periods.
Director General of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Dhahirah, Eng. Amer bin Saif Al Barhi, formalized the documents alongside executives from private contracting firms tasked with execution. He highlighted that preserving the historic aflaj system remains a paramount priority for national policy, serving as both a cherished element of Omani heritage and a critical foundation for domestic food security. By restoring stable water delivery, the ministry aims to protect rural livelihoods, prevent agricultural land abandonment, and strengthen economic resilience throughout the governorate.
Furthermore, field engineering teams will supervise the contractors closely to guarantee rapid execution and adhere to strict technical standards, ensuring these revitalized networks withstand future climatic challenges and continue supporting generations of local growers. Oman Daily Report
