The Royal Oman Police has released an official statement to alert its citizens about the increasing problem of electronic extortion and has urged people to avoid contacting extortioners. The security advice stresses that collaboration with cyber extortioners will encourage the criminals to make further demands on the victims. ROP Electronic Blackmail Warning
Criminal hackers commit cyber extortion by exploiting technology and social networking sites, as well as stealing victims’ personal information. They often use the information in the form of personal photos and videos of the victims that they steal illegally. The advice warns that extortioners adopt different ways of stealing such personal data, including building fake online profiles, hacking accounts, and stealing leaked personal data. Once possession of the private information is established, perpetrators pressure victims for financial payouts, additional personal content, unlawful favors, or continuous personal control.
To assist families and community members in identifying potential abuse, police officials pointed to several warning indicators. Individuals subjected to cyber extortion often exhibit abrupt behavioral shifts, unexplained financial strain, and severe emotional or psychological distress. Police stress that early recognition of these indicators can help loved ones step in and seek professional intervention before further harm occurs.

Law enforcement authorities strongly advise affected individuals to break all communication with extortionists rather than attempting negotiation. Victims must retain all digital evidence to assist police investigations, including direct messages, chat transcripts, media files, and account information, avoiding any urge to wipe records or clear messaging logs.
Furthermore, public safety experts highlight that strictly maintaining digital privacy settings, updating passwords regularly, and avoiding sharing sensitive media with unverified online contacts can significantly reduce the likelihood of falling victim to such malicious online schemes.
The Royal Oman Police reaffirmed its commitment to investigating cybercrimes while protecting victims’ privacy through confidential reporting mechanisms. Members of the public who encounter digital extortion or cyber threats are urged to contact law enforcement immediately via the designated toll-free hotline at 80077444 or through official reporting channels.
